unusual pattern, slow down east shore freeway. bay moves smoothly. south bay, northbound commute moves nicely. not wet here but we're still in transition. >> update in a half hour. good morning. snovember. cities along the great lakes paralyzed by more than six feet of snow in less than a day. at least five deaths now blamed on the storm. roads shut down, hundreds stranded in vehicles overnight including a college basketball team. guess what? even more snow is on the way. >> new accusations, the bill cosby scandal widens as the high profile accuser comes forward. former super model janice dickinson claiming she was drugged and sexually assaulted by the comedian in the 1980s.

calling it a lie. a recall of all cars with a certain defective air bag. saying millions of drivers are at risk. why are the makers pushing back? and from tonight to today a rare appearance from jay leno live in our studio, wednesday, november 19, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. you may have seen as we came inside that the image outside said 22 degrees in new york city. don't worry about that. how would you like to live around the great lakes today? >> in buffalo new york it's snowing so hard we had a great shot for you all cued up to show you of the snow coming down. we lost it because the snow is so bad. >> it's all about location,

location, location. the band of snow is only about ten miles wide. you go ten miles south of that there is almost nothing. the airport has a few inches. >> talking six feet of snow. >> it's piling up a lot in the great lakes region as al said. this is our top story. conditions are so bad around buffalo the national guard had been deployed. today's dylan dreyer is south of there in dunkirk, new york. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. here in western new york we are measuring the snow in feet. six feet of snow in some areas, most of that falling in just a 24-hour period. new york's governor has declared a state of emergency, and as you mentioned called up the national guard. and it's hard to believe that more snow is still on the way. blinding and brutal. the snow coming down at a rate of 4 inches every hour. time lapse footage showing a wall of snow moving in off lake erie called lake-effect snow and

having effect. there is a car under there and there, and there. hundreds of vehicles were stranded including a bus carrying the niagara women's basketball team. stuck for more than 20 hours. among the many in need of rescuing. >> cars everywhere, even the police officers off in ditches. >> buffalo's mayor urges people to stay off the roads. >> we're asking that people stay home. >> some have no choice. >> my ignition is frozen. >> this is a one-in-a-lifetime thing. this is something people are going to tell their grandkids about. those stranded by the storm told their stories using social media. winter tested residents in awe with the snow piled so high it towered over some or presented a nearly impossible task. others swallowed up. for those trying to leave home, it left quite an impression. others seized the opportunity to get out and play.

here in dunkirk we're getting a break. we have clear skies here. there's been a wind shift and now the heaviest snow, the white-out conditions, just 35 miles up the road. al, it's incredible to see just where this heavy snow sets up, how long it sits over one area and dumps all of that snow, and when it decides to move. >> absolutely. let's go to the radar. show you exactly what's happening right now. i mean, okay. so, this is western new york. dylan is about here along i-90 in dunkirk. there's the heavy snow coming across the lake inundating buffalo right now and will continue over the next several hours, then shut off, and then it's going to start up again. we've got winter storm warning, lake-effect snow watches and warnings for western new york, winter weather advisories for the leeward side of the central and northern great lakes. this clipper cuts off the lake-effect snow for a few hours, then moves east and brings back that flow across the lakes and so the lake-effect

snow machine kicks in again later this afternoon into this evening. so, over the next 24 hours, you've got about 1 to 3 inches to 3 to 6 inches, maybe 9 inches in the northern part of chigan. but look at what happened as you get to western new york. another 24 inches could be 3 more feet of snow between dunkirk and buffalo and up here in the tug hill plateau east of watertown and pulaski, snowfall rates could be up to three inches per hour. and as the latter part of this week into the weekend into next week we've got a big storm system including tornado possibilities through texas so a lot going on over the next several days. >> all right, al, thank you very much. >> a story for people as you get ready to drive to work. the federal government demanding the auto industry recall millions of additional cars because of a potential defect with the air bags in the vehicles. it's been linked to dozens of injuries and four deaths in the

united states. nbc's tom costello is outside orlando. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. this is a 2001 honda involved in a front end accident in september. a 51-year-old woman was driving, the highway patrol has taken the steering wheel and the air bag because the preliminary evidence suggests that the air bag exploded, sending shrapnel into her neck. she simply lost too much blood and died three days later. her name was yentron. she moved to be closer to her sister. she died after colliding with another car on a nearby road in september. the family is now suing honda and the air bag maker, takata. >> there is no question that this woman was needlessly killed by takata air bags. >> the attorney says shards of metal came. >> you can see it on the floor, went forward toward her are metal fragments from the inflator.

>> it came into her face and neck. >> shoots through the bag into her neck. >> the medical examiner ruled she died as a result of penetrating injuries to the neck and blunt force trauma. the fourth death in the u.s. investigators believe is tied to the defective air bags. days after she died, her family received the urgent recall notice from honda. now, the government is demanding a nationwide recall including honda, ford, chrysler, mazda and bmw from 2008 or earlier. it was push for hot humid climates out that contrin butte to the defect. auto safety advocates insist this broader sx long overdo. >> we're 10 years after 2004, just doing what we should have done a long time ago which is a national wide recall of all driver side air bags. >> reporter: this morning takata, the air bag maker is without a statement. it says it is committed to

addressing all safety issues promptly but does worry a gs f it sthose are the states wiigh humidity and heath and it says that could put lives at risk. tomorrow, congressional hearings into this entire air bag matter. back to you. >> tom, thanks very much. >> now to ferguson, missouri where tensions are mounting as a grand jury decision nears in the michael brown case. craig melvin is in ferguson. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. at this point still no indication as to when we might expect even get a decision from the grand jury, regarding a decision much of this street looking like a city preparing for a hurricane with boarded up businesses, lots of folks hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. >> what's happening in ferguson now. >> reporter: from talk radio to freezing protest lines, it's the

topic of conversation for a town on edge. >> it's nerve-racking. >> i will faithly -- >> on tuesday the governor swore in members of a 16-person commission devoted to deal with issues like poverty and policing in ferguson. the governor also defended his decision to preemptively declare a state of emergency and call up the national guard. >> just about 100% of people being safe and 100% having a right to speak. >> reporter: but fears persist that additional police and guard troops could trigger the violence sparked in august, days after the michael brown shooting. back then some area schools were closed for six days. this time educators are planning online courses while residents are stocking up. >> blankets in the car, i mean, just you never know. if they are going to plok off streets and we're stranded. >> reporter: local shops boarded up but open for business. >> very, very stressful. >> reporter: charles davis refuses to board up ferguson's

burger and bar. >> you're one of two businesses not boarded up. >> correct. >> why? >> i'm putting trust in my community. >> reporter: a community once again in the national spotlight. we have been told that grand jurors continue to hear evidence in this case. at this point we don't know how much notice this community is going to get once a decision has been reached. we do know that the 12-member grand jury considering everything from murder to no charges at all. back to you. >> thanks. >> we'll learn a lot more about the attack in israel. natalie has the latest. >> what we're hearing is more disturbing as worshipers returning back to the jerusalem synagogue this morning where five people were killed in that savage tck by two palestinian men on tuesday. bill neely is in jerusalem with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. from a city still reeling from

massacre the worst here in six year, and fearful, braced really, that for more trouble, fearful there could be more copy cat attacks. at the synagogue where many survived a mass murder, they prayed again this morning. bullet holes the only reminder of the horror here that took the lives of four worshipers. they have been buried, the fear here remains. and the grief. three of the dead were americans, one the son of a prominent family of boston rabbis. israel's prime minister promised a harsh response, and that began with the demolition of the homes of a palestinian involved in a previous attack. yesterday's killings were carried out by two cousins who police say had no criminal record and acted alone. they were shot dead by police. one of the police men hit in the battle later died of his injuries. clashes between police and

protesters followed the attack. but the violence that has scarred jerusalem for months now is random. israeli authorities are struggling to find ring leaders and to contain it. there is increased security here, more helicopters, more concrete barriers, more police in palestinian areas but doubt toss that all that will do any good. there are fears that this is slowly turning from a political conflict into a religious one. natalie. >> bill neely, thank you. the secret service in the hot seat on capitol hill today acting director joseph clancey will answer questions from lawmakers about a series of recent security lapses at the white house. some lawmakers expressed concerns over procedures regarding the secret service's mission to protect the first family. >> republicans in the senate are promising democrats they haven't heard the last of the keystone xl oil pipe line, a vote to approve the project fell short in the u.s. senate tuesday

supermodel and tv host janet dickerson said back in 1982 she visited cosby in lake tahoe. after dinner, she says, the comedian gave her wine and a pill. >> i remember before i passed out that i had been sexually assaulted by this man. the last thing i remember was bill cosby in a patchwork robe, dropping his robe and getting on top of me. and i remember a lot of pain. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc news, cosby's lawyer says that story was a complete lie. they say she contradicted it in her 2002 book and in an interview with "the new york observer" when she said cosby blew her off when she at any time want to sleep with him. she is now the third woman in recent days to accuse the 77-year-old of sexual assault. after video of stand-up comedian hannibal burris calling him a

"today in the bay's" bob redell live on the scene. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, it doesn't appear this is resolved as of yet, laura, especially after 45 minutes ago when we saw and heard this -- a man with -- we just heard two flash bangs. you can hear concussive blasts, two large blasts just came. that was going on during a live shot around 6:45 this morning, two flash bangs deployed by the

it's good to see him. >> it really is. all right. let's begin this half hour with tracy morgan. the comedian was seriously injured in a car crash. that happened last summer. and a friend of his was killed in that accident. this morning, we're learning more about the extent of morgan's injuries. stephanie gosk has the latest on this. good morning, steph. >> hey, matt. morgan's injuries, his lawyer says, included brain damage and it's not clear whether he will ever fully recover. >> and eddie murphy's oscar, because he ran out on scary spike, and now -- >> reporter: this is the tracy morgan fans love. but morgan's lawyer says he is struggling to get back to his old self. the june accident may have left lasting injuries beyond a broken leg, nose and ribs. >> the people i represent all had traumatic brain injuries and that's including tracy. if and when he recovers from these injuries, it will be

miraculous. that's how injured he was. >> reporter: morgan and several friends were being driven on a new jersey highway early morning when a walmart truck slammed into their limo van. the comic, james mcnair, died and everyone else was injured. kevin roper, the walmart driver, pled not guilty to multiple charges, including vehicular homicide. morgan is suing walmart for nenlths, saying the chain knew or should have known that he had been awake more than 24 consecutive hours at the time of the crash. the extent of the actor's injuries. >> if he has serious brain injuries that prevent him from working and he's a very high-earning actor, this is going to be a very, very big case. >> reporter: lawyers for walmart filed a response to the suit, arguing the actor and his friends were largely to blame for their injuries, because they were not wearing seat belts. in a statement on monday, walmart said our thoughts

good morning to you. 7:56, i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are covering breaking news, out of san jose. that is where police have been engaged in the standoff very close to a high school. it's happening in the area of large grove place in hayes avenue near oak grove high school. officers have been negotiating with a man, he locked himself inside a home last night, refusing to come out. he's believed to have a child with him. we don't know the relationship. but about 6:45 this morning we heard the sound of flash bangs coming from that area, where you see the live pictures. they were hoping the situation would be resolved but it wasn't the case as police remain on the scene. students from oak grove high school, the school nearby, are being told not to bow to school until the situation is resolved.

brown is attending a meeting in san francisco. he wants to hear first hand about the plan to raise tuition fees. the governor actually opposes this plan. uc president janet napolitano says the university needs more money and depends on tuition hikes for survival. if approved, 5% every year for the next five years. the san jose earthquake's new soccer stadium has a new name. the santa clara-based tech services company has agreed to a naming rights deal that amounts to $20 million over ten years. construction on that stadium is set to wrap up next month. lots of excited people about watching earthquake games there. we'll have a look at weather and traffic right after the break.

of a variety of books about her furry friends. >> her latest "yoda," about an amazing cat that she and her husband howard adopted into her family. >> yoda is not here? >> yoda is working. howard and i adopted this cat from north shore animal league. he had been in a cage way too long. we soon found out he was in heart failure, he had three to six months to live. we decided we'd love on him until that last day. we bought him home. it was the beginning of kitten season. we fostered 90 kittens since a year ago june. joe da walked into the room one day and he took over. our boy cat yoda. his hair started to grow. he gained weight. i have taken him back to the vet since.
